During the week of Sept. 10-16, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, eight; Puna, three; Hamakua, two; Ka‘u, North Kohala, South Kohala and North Hilo, one each.
So far this year, there have been 811 DUI arrests compared to 821 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.2 percent.
There have been 884 major accidents so far this year compared to 955 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.4 percent.
To date, there have been 22 official traffic fatalities, compared to 26 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 15.4 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
